Thanks to Ed Flemke Jr.
This is the start of the 1956 Riverside 500. Ed had won pole; he and teammate Moe Gherzi won the race.
The #28 was built by Richie Garuti, to team with his brother Ray’s #14. Richie told Ray that he chose the number 28 because it was twice as good as Ray’s #14 and his driver, Ed, was twice as good as Ray’s driver Moe Gherzi. Ed drove the Garutis’ 14 and 28 cars from 1955 through 1958. Photo by Shany Lorenzet.

1958-07-26 – Riverside 500 – qualified 3rd with George Lombardo.
1958 – Riverside 500. Ed is on the inside, second row.
1958 – Riverside 500. Ed is starting in 3rd position, inside second row.
Riverside. Ed is on the inside, second row.
I believe that this car was owned by Dick Dixon. It may or may not be a coincidence that it bore the same number as the Garuti #28 Modified coupe which Ed was racing regularly during the same period. Photo by Shany Lorenzet.
